3.0 Introduction

In this chapter, we will discuss on the steps that will be taken to investigate the usage of internet among the UMP student. This means to identify the problems and describe the respondents’ population of the surveys that are selected. We also will explain on how we carry out our surveys and the research procedures that we choose to do.

3.1 Setting

Our research targets are UMP students which use computer labs the most during the class as UMP provides internet facility in the labs. So, the most suitable students who can be as respondents are the computer science students since they will use the computer labs the most compared with the other students from other faculties. This research will be carry out in UMP around the computer labs during the lecture hours. The students that we had selected are from first year and second year from three programs which are 1 BCN 10 respondents, 2 BCN 11 respondents, 1 BCS 12 respondents, 2 BCS 12 respondents, 1 BCG 8 respondents and 2 BCG 7 respondents.

3.2 Data Collection

3.2.1 Instrument

Since the research is conducted in a small area of study, the best method for the data collection method will be questionnaire survey form. We have two sections in our questionnaires. Section A is the respondents personal’s details such as gender, course and year. For section B the respondents need to answer the questions about the internet usage in class. Section B consists of dichotomous question, categorical question, scale question, and opinion question of free response question.

3.2.2 Procedure

There are several steps that have and will be taken to conduct the data collection. Firstly, we brainstorm on the topic for the survey. Then, some research has been made to get information for the literature review on the usage of the internet. Next, we decide on the instrument to collect respondent’s opinion about this topic which is made based on articles references that we read. Through distributing questionnaires to 60 respondents, the respondents were chosen among the first year and second year of BCN, BCS and BCG of FSKKP students in UMP, based on their gender. Even though our targeted respondents are 60, some extra copies of questionnaires were made in case of rejected form. Finally, date collected will be analyzed so that conclusion and recommendation can be made.

3.2 Data Analysis

In data analysis, we created in the coding sheet. In coding sheet have variable and respondent. After that, frequencies of the respondents voting for each question were listed down based on answered questionnaires from the data collection instrument. All the data collected from the questionnaires will be presented as percentage so that we can make conclusion easily. From the results that we analyzed into the coding sheet, we will present them in the form of pie chart and also table so that we can see the frequencies of each question clearly.
